Jandy-Laars Pool Heaters

Looking around the web there seems to be considerable confusion as to the correct name for this range of heaters. You might see these pool heaters sold as Laars, Teledyne-Laars, Jandy or Zodiac. The history of this is rather complicated but as I understand it the following is what happened.

The originial company was Laars Engineers formed in 1948. It was bought by Teledyne in the mid 1960s and became Teledyne Laars. In the mid 90s Teledyne purchased Jandy Industries and sold pool heaters under the Jandy name. Later in the 90s Teledyne split its business into three with Jandy getting the home pool business. Laars Heating Systems got the commercial side of the business. Later, in 2007, Jandy was merged with Zodiac Marine creating Zodiac Pool Products which is now a global player in the pool equipment market. Zodiac presently sell 2 gas pool heaters under the Jandy brand and one under the Zodiac brand (although you will frequently see it advertised as Jandy or Laars Jandy!).

The present line-up of pool heaters is:

Jandy Hi-E2 (actually this should be under Zodiac brand but you rarely see that) – This is a 350k BTU gas heater which is suitable for commercial, as well as home use, as it is ASME certified. It is the most energy efficient gas heater you can buy with a rating of 95% and it also meets all low NOx requirements. It has a very high build quality with durability and reliability in mind. It has a dual thermostat for use with pool/spa combinations. Unfortunately all this is reflected in the price which is about three times that of the other pool heaters on this page.

Jandy-LXi – Ranging from 250 – 400k BTU these gas pool heaters are 88% energy efficient. In addition they have low NOx emissions meeting all requirements in this respect. The LXi range also have a sophisticated control panel which can be removed from the heater.

Jandy Legacy – A range of gas pool heaters from 125k – 400k BTU/hr with models for natural gas and propane and with electronic and millivolt ignition. They are 83% efficient and make no claim to be low NOx. The legacy heaters have a number of advanced features, are designed to be reliable and are relatively inexpensive, making then good value for money.

Jandy Heat Pump – The Jandy AE heat pumps are available in three capacities AE2000 100K BTU, AE2500 115 BTU and AE3000 131 BTU. The latter two models also being available with Chiller/Hot Gas Defrost which allows the unit to work in cold conditions and also to work in reverse and chill the pool in summer. All models feature a standard titanium heat exchanger (with lifetime warranty against corrosion). A 40 amp electricity supply is required.

Which should you choose? Well it depends on how you will use your pool heater and also whether you are prepared to pay more upfront to make savings later. If you are going to heat your pool constantly a heat pump will be cheapest to run and the best buy long term. If you only intend to heat your pool occasionally then a gas heater may be better as it will heat the pool faster and will be cheaper to buy. The Hi-E2 would be too costly leaving the option of the Lxi or Legacy. If NOx emissions are an issue in your location then it will have to be the LXi but if not the legacy would seem to be the best buy. Of course if you need a millivolt heater then the Legacy is the only option from Jandy pool heaters.

im about to buy an air compressor from ebay do all air compressors go from o to what ever is max PSI?

or do some start from like 40 psi to the max psi

This is the description is this good for painting a car
27 gallon ASME Vertical Portable Tank
125-155 PSI Working Pressure, 7.7 CFM @ 40 PSI, 6.0 CFM @ 90 PSI, 1.9 Running HP, 120 Volt

This will spray all wood/metal just fine. Remember to get the paint mix right and only spray when it’s over 70 f. Look online for painting tips. And ONLY spray in an enclosed space.
